In a city of more than 22 million people, where and whom would you say that you have a close connection with other than the people in your normal surroundings? I.D.esign is a project that allows a person to connect with a stranger and observe and interact with design through this unfamiliar lens. Our purpose is to create these relationships with two or more people that center around their interest in creativity. We will start the show and the passport that we create will be a hand-made keepsake identification for a unique individual. This passport will serve multiple purposes such as introducting someone new to the holder of that passport as well as keeping track of which hotspot that persons has gone to. We'd like to create this large social network leading to the end reception, where participants will have a chance to interact with each other face to face.
Using the reservoir of I.D. mug shots from the I.D.esign passport project (http://nathanbecker.com/china) for "Alt," an alternative, independent artist show inspired by Beijing Design Week. Handmade passports were hand stamped at each art installation or art space along the map, including this prototype for a projection of the faces of passport holders: participating artists, tourists, invited guests, interested people passing or working nearby. The large projection was to further the theme of I.D.esign, questioning the nature of connecting with a stranger, through a 'found' I.D. passport. By publicly projecting the faces, the viewer sees a stranger, a friend, herself in a stream of constantly updating faces.
